10 Things We Need To See In HBO Harry Potter Series

1. Squibs

Harry Potter Deleted Scene Filch Squib

A Squib is a child born into a magical family who possesses no magical ability at all. The best known example of this is Argus Filch, the bane of many Hogwarts students and the caretaker of the school. His constant war with pupils is explained by his jealousy of their powers.

There are several dark suggestions as to how Squibs are treated throughout the books. Filch, while detestable, is a focus of much loathing by many of the students. More than once, his status as Squib is used as an insult against him. Even Ron mentions that his mother has a second cousin who is an accountant, before he quickly says that they never talk about him

If Ron is able to so casually talk about the segregation of Squibs from wizards like this, it does not bode well for Squibs in general. Auntie Muriel makes it very clear that she considers them shameful when relating the story of Kendra Dumbledore to Harry, and Neville Longbottom often worried that his lack of magical prowess would be taken to mean that he too had no powers to speak of.

While the books have often preached tolerance and inclusion, addressing the issues of Squibs in wizarding society would be a positive step toward showing that, despite the issues behind the scenes, there are still safe spaces for all people in the Potter universe.
