10 Things We Need To See In HBO Harry Potter Series

2. The Most Noble And Ancient House Of Black

Sirius Black Harry Potter
Warner Bros

Sirius Black is an oddity in his direct family in that he had no interest in the dark arts, at any point in his life. While his brother Regulus was a slower convert to the good side, their parents were unapologetically obsessed with the pure blood status of the family.

The idea of blood status becomes an incredibly important part of the plot of the Deathly Hallows. Voldemort's supporters hunt people down based on how much Muggle blood is in their family, while wizards who are known supporters of Muggles are treated with disdain. When did this schism begin and what was the beginning?

The Black family tree shows that most of the named witches and wizards of the day were members, if you go back far enough. As Ron Weasley says at one point, wizards had to marry with Muggles, or they would have died out. Those families that refused to mingle would inevitably be forced to consider incest, simply to keep the line pure. That could have been a major factor in contributing toward the rise of the dark arts, as was shown in the story of the Gaunts.

While the Blacks, Malfoys and Potters may not be the same families directly, they are all so interwoven that it is hard to separate them. Where then do they cross and what did this mean for the magical community?
