10 Things We Want To See From Disney's Live-Action The Lion King
8. A Larger Female Presence
Something that worked extremely well for The Jungle Book was its beefed-up female presence. Like The Lion King, the film has a strong bias towards male characters, and Favreau helped balance the scales through giving Kaa the voice of Scarlett Johansson, and through bringing mother wolf, Rakasha (Lupito Nyong’o) into the fold.
With nearly all the pivotal characters in The Lion King being male, we’d like to see Favreau once again achieve some gender balance. I doubt ZaZu would mind a sex change, or perhaps Favreau will learn from the hit stage show and render Rafiki as a woman.
Implementing more of a female presence will not alter how we receive the movie and ultimately, it’ll be refreshing to see something like this come off, especially in a time when women are more prominent in Hollywood than ever before.
