10 Things You Didn't Know About Back To The Future
10. John Lithgow, Dudley Moore And Jeff Goldblum Were All Considered For The Role Of Doc Brown
There are some choices that you can get right, and others that you can just get completely wrong. Jeff Goldblum is a fantastic actor, as was Dudley Moore (the original Arthur is great), but neither would have fit the role of Doc Brown particularly well. Not only did neither actor look particularly old around the time of Back To The Future's release, they also had far too much hair for the part of a kooky scientist. John Lithgow on the other hand, would have been an almost perfect alternative to Christopher Lloyd's eventual casting. Severely receding hairline? Check. Eccentric yet able to put on a semi-serious demeanor when required? Double check. Lithgow, like Lloyd is able to perform on a broad spectrum when it comes to comedic and serious roles; you only have to watch his performances in Third Rock From The Sun and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes to know he can be both utterly bizarre and serious in equal measure. In terms of famous film roles that could be adequately replaced by another actor, a Doc Brown played by John Lithgow would definitely be near the top of such a list.
