10 Things You Didn't Know About Maika Monroe

2. She Doesn't Want To Be A Scream Queen

Because Monroe has had back-to-back success with The Guest and It Follows, it's not too surprising that she's been given the legendary Scream Queen label, which is typically bestowed upon tough, sexy, smart femme fatales who carve out a career for themselves in the horror genre. Maika isn't hugely keen on the descriptor, though, explaining, "I mean, I do like the genre but that was not planned at all...I joined The Guest because I loved the script and I love who was involved with it...I'm not really thinking, 'Oh, it€™s two horror movies. I can't do that.' There are two characters I really want to play. And people I really want to work with." She adds, "I think that people will realize in the coming years I€™m probably not going to be that...These are probably the two horror movies I'll do, but then again I can€™t say never -- because I could get another amazing genre movie tomorrow and I'm like, 'I'm in!' So the projects I have coming up have nothing to do with horror. They€™re really quite different." Monroe's upcoming releases include sci-fi drama Bokeh, drama The Tribes of Palos Verdes, young adult sci-fi adaptation The 5th Wave, and of course, Independence Day 2, so it's safe to say that she'll be away from the horror genre for at least a few years, likely shaking off the label in the process.
