When Woody was a young adolescent he took up the clarinet, something he still does to this day. He frequently plays in jazz clubs in New York and for years people have been able to catch him every Monday night at The Carlyle Hotel with The Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. His hobby became the subject of Barbara Kopple's 1997 documentary Wild Man Blues and displayed his love of New Orleans jazz as he toured Europe with the band, who he has played with for over 25 years. He has also recorded two albums with them, fhe first one being The Bunk Project in 1993 and the soundtrack to Wild Man Blues in 1997. He has played publicly since the late 60's and spoke of his passion in an interview with The Village Voice-
"Jazz has a mythological feeling to it€”time has done that, and early jazz especially, since it was the birth of the art form. I just love it."
Jazz is also a part of his film career, as it is used quite a bit in the opening and closing credits of his films along with a white-on-black background and using the Windsor typeface without scrolling.
