10 Things You Didn't Realise Inspired Iconic Movie Voices
3. Venom - Multiple Musicians
In the 2018 film, Venom, Tom Hardy plays neurotic reporter, Eddie Brock, and the titular alien that merges with him. Because the London-born actor is playing a violent, aggressive, head-chomping extra-terrestrial, you'd assume Hardy drew inspiration from carnivores or jungle animals.
But Hardy never does anything obvious. He always thinks outside the box, which is what makes him such a terrific actor. To find the life and soul of an alien parasite, Hardy looked at musicians like RedMan, Busta Rhymes, and the Godfather of Soul himself - James Brown.
At first, these talented singers seem to have NOTHING in common with Venom. But Hardy didn't see the character as a big scary villain but as an "outlandish and big" persona. He was drawn to emulating musicians because their voices sounded "electric and soulful, but at the same time, primal." He blended them together to find a voice that sounded "enigmatic and charismatic, as well as being dangerous and scary."
The movie may have received mixed reviews from critics but Tom Hardy was heavily praised for his performance as one of Marvel's most iconic antiheroes.
