2. The Cast's Intense Training Program

A lot of the stunts were filmed up in the air and in the jets. So to prepare the cast for that, everyone had to go through intense 3 month fighter jet ejector training. What this essentially means is that the cast had to experience what it would feel like to be ejected into the water from the seat of a fighter jet. Cast member Monica Barbaro compared this feeling to being drowned multiple times. They also had to spend a lot of time in the aircraft themselves, which meant that some members of the cast who were more prone to motion sickness, had to find a way to improve their G-tolerance and not pass out.

Tom Cruise clearly played a major role in the training of the actors. His intense training program made sure to personally walk each member of the cast through the camera work and editing so that they could have a real understanding of what the perspective would be and so that they would be able to nail their cues when filming in the cockpit of one of the jets.

Cruise led his team by being the perfect example. This action-man has a license for almost everything from his commercial pilots licenses to boat, jet and helicopter licenses. Every shot of him in the film is reportedly real footage of him flying the jet. That makes the shots and the scenes in the film so much more impressive.
