10 Things You Never Noticed In The Cornetto Trilogy
5. Making Fun Of The Competition (Shaun Of The Dead)
Wright and Pegg know their zombie films. Arguably a little too well, as Shaun Of The Dead seems especially packed with inside jokes, Easter eggs and nods to the history of the genre that will be lost on all but the most fervent fans of the undead. For example, did you know that the title is actually a pun on Dawn Of The Dead? Crazy! Oh and the film totally makes fun of two of the biggest films in the pantheon of zombie films, George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead and Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. And you'll only hear them if you're playing very close attention. During Shaun's first trip to the shop at the start of the film, he walks past a street cleaner playing a radio, which is playing a news report about a satellite that crashed to Earth that was the (admittedly shaky) explanation for the rising of the dead in Romero's classic film which pretty much sparked the whole genre. A much less fond homage is given to Boyle's film at the very end, when Shaun and Liz turn off the telly in the middle of a news reporter confirming that claims the plague was started by a load of "rage-infected monkeys was proven to be bolloc-". Not a fan of running zombies, that Pegg.
