10 Times 90s Cinema Tried To Reboot 60s Television (And Failed)
5. The Beverly Hillbillies (1993)
There was an awful lot of family “fish out of water” reboots in the ’90s that actually worked really well, such as The Addams Family being all spooky and kooky, or the self-aware Brady Bunch Movie where the groovy, cheesy but lovable family clashed against '90s sensibilities. Sadly, The Beverly Hillbillies didn't transition so well.
The premise of the show and the film sees a family of hillbillies take residence, believe it or not, in Beverly Hills, after coming into unforeseen riches, the joke being that they’re all a bit thick.
Such hilarious highlights include father Jed brandishing a shotgun on the freeway and Granny falling off various vehicles such as motorbikes and trucks. Despite receiving appalling reviews, the movie somehow enjoyed moderate box office success, but thankfully not enough to spawn a sequel. Never doubt the power of nostalgia, ladies and gentlemen.
