10 Times Comedic Actors Went Against Type (And Totally Pulled It Off)
1. Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Jim Carrey is without question one of cinema's most beloved comedic presences. With his defining roles in The Grinch, Ace Ventura, The Mask, Liar Liar and Dumb and Dumber, Carrey made his career out if being the most energetic and hilarious actors on screen.
He briefly moved into drama territory with his role in 1998's The Truman Show and 1999's Man on the Moon, but it wasn't until 2004's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that he fully immersed himself into a role of pure drama.
Whilst Truman and Man on the Moon allowed him to occasionally lean into his comedic chops, Carrey's role as Joel Barish, a man who sets out to have his ex-girlfriend erased from his memory, allows for no such situation.
Rather, the film forces Carrey to embrace his calmer and more measured side, and what he creates is a beautiful and even tragic portrayal of a man confused and tormented by his feelings.
With a career spanning decades, Carrey has still got a long way to go, and if he focuses on bringing roles like this to the screen he can only keep going up and up.
