10 Times Doctor Who Actors Took On Another Cult Franchise

2. Christopher Eccleston In Thor

Bet you didn't recognise him at first, did you? It's safe to say that Christopher Eccleston's role in Thor: The Dark World was as transformative as they come, so much so that you probably wouldn't even realise it was him unless you'd previously peeked at the credits. Let's face it, though, you'd have to be stuck in the Medusa Cascade to have not heard the news of his casting. The Ninth Doctor star played Malekith in the 2013 sequel (or Malekith the Accursed, if you want to get personal - and he certainly does!). He also goes by the names 'Master of the Hounds', 'the Dark Elf' and the somewhat less intimidating 'Malcolm Drake' and he's basically the ruler of the Dark Elves, thank you very much. He once wielded the Casket of Ancient Winters (whatever that means) so, if you hadn't guessed it by now, he's serious business indeed. Suffice to say, you wouldn't want to meet this guy in a dark alley but thankfully he died at the end of the film after being crushed by his own ship, and thus Asgard is safe once more (that is, until the next adversary comes along in its threequel Thor: Ragnarok, in 2017). It's probably better that he died, really, as Doctor Who fans know all too well that Chris doesn't like to outstay his welcome when it comes to appearing in the world's most formidable franchises. He's more of a 'pop in, make everyone fall in love with you and then shock the nation to its core by leaving after just one series' sort of guy. Yep. Still not over it.
