10 Times Hollywood Failed To Adapt World Cinema

8. Death Note (2017)

The cries and wails across social media are still fresh in our memories, after Netflix dared to touch sacred ground in 2017. After all, the much-loved manga/anime had already received the live action treatment in Japan, in 2006.

The Japanese adaptation, however, cleverly made two full-length films due to the length of the plot, and although Tetsuya Oishi changed the ending, it’s still a worthy adaptation that kept the mood of its source material.

The American version, directed by Adam Wingard, only kept the blueprint of the manga. There is only one reason to watch this, and that is Willem Dafoe’s performance as Ryuk. Overall, though, you’re best staying clear.

If you've only seen this one, nobody would blame you for being put off the whole idea. But please - we urge you to check out the Japanese version. Or, even better, watch the anime and read the manga.
