10 Times James Bond Should Have Been Killed

4. From Russia With Love

The tale that JFK labelled his favourite of all time, From Russia with Love was brought to the screen in 1963 and proved to be every bit the success as Bond's first outing in Dr No. With extra villains, more espionage and set pieces that were decades ahead of its time, the sequel had it all

The film does have one glaring moment of 'wtf', when deranged SPECTRE agent Grant captures Bond while ravelling on the Orient Express. After slowly revealing all the intricacies of their dastardly scheme, Shaw tells Bond how he will kill him in a convoluted manner as a means of torture for the British spy.

Out of extreme desperation at the likely prospect of a slow and painful death, Bond asks Shaw if he could buy some cigarettes off him. Yes, he asks to buy a smoke. Rather than just giving him one of his own, the previously bright Shaw allows 007 to grab some gold sovereigns from his suitcase to pay for the cigarette. Bond manages to get the suitcase to explode, an intense fight ensues, before the British spy comes up trumps.

It proves to be a really silly moment in an otherwise very clever film, with the perfect SPECTRE plan foiled because of an evil agent making a really bad call. Especially when he could have just taken the gold sovereigns and kept his ciggies for himself!
