10 Times Movie Sequels Screwed Over Strong Female Characters

Indiana Jones: Raiders Of The Lost Ark is a legendary film for a number of reasons.

The impressive special effects (melting Nazis), Harrison Ford's shoot now - sword fight later attitude and the mesmerising action scenes that have been parodied for nearly 40 years.

Something that does go under the radar, however, is the performance of Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, an old love interest of Indie's, who turns out to be a strong, independent individual who can certainly knock back a drink.

Allen improvised a lot in the famous scene where she challenges the Nazi sympathiser to a drinking contest, after she was given free reign by Spielberg to do so due to her impressive performance in National Lampoon's Animal House.

Almost 30 years later fans were elated to hear that not only Harrison Ford would reprise his role, but that Allen would also be back as Marion.

Although Marion takes on Nazis in fist fights and drinking contests in Raiders Of The Lost Ark, she ends up being reduced to a side character desperately trying to catch up with Indy and Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) and showing none of her tenaciousness from the first film.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
