10 Times Movie Sequels Screwed Over Strong Female Characters
5. Jessie - Toy Story 3
Toy Story 2 is one of the greatest movie sequels of all time.
Released in 1999, Woody and Buzz faced another heart stopping adventure featuring new characters Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer), Al McWhiggin (Wayne Knight) and Jessie (Joan Cusack), the most rootinest tootinest cowgirl in all the west.
Woody meets Jessie after being kidnapped by Al and added to his creepy toy collection. Here we see that Jessie is a tough, easy-going, bundle of energy with her own tragic backstory. Her character is extremely well developed and acted, going from unmistakably brave and adventurous to fearful and skeptical about finding a new owner and getting thrown out again.
Who can forget that tragic montage of Jessie being left abandoned set to Sarah McLoughlin's When She Loved Me.
Unlike Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3 has no notable Jessie moments at all. Apart from her signature yodel and whistle to call her noble steed, Bullseye, there is little to remind the audience of her tenacious character. Her most memorable scene is when she is caught up in Buzz' Spanish factory reset mode. Hilarious as the scene is, it feels like her potential is wasted in this film.
