10 Tiny Horror Movie Details That Give Away Character Secrets
3. Don’t Fear The Reaper - Scream
In movies, non-diagetic sound is sound that does not occur within the fictional world of the film. Basically, if you can hear the noise but the characters can't, then it's non-diagetic.
The term is usually used to refer to music, more appropriately a soundtrack or a score. In this scene from the classic slasher movie Scream, the soundtrack is basically yelling right in your face that that Billy Loomis is a rotter.
When the character is first introduced, arriving at his girlfriend Sidney's house shortly after she receives a call from Ghostface, a slowed down version of the classic Blue Oyster Cult song "(Don't) Fear the Reaper" starts playing.
This works on a bunch of levels. One, Ghostface's mask is a skeleton head, imagery usually associated with the grim reaper. Secondly, the word "Don't" in the title is in parenthesis, which means that it can be removed from the sentence. Sidney doesn't fear Billy, but she definitely should, because it turns out he's partly responsible for all the death and destruction she's about to endure.
This is academic level construction from the Scream team, which is way more than you'd expect from a movie that's seemingly just about people getting stabbed.
