Which is a shame, all things considered. Director Roland Emmerich managed to lure Jeff Goldblum back for an incredibly belated sequel, after all, and there was a chance to make something really crazy and cool. Unfortunately, the footage glimpsed thus far just seems like "more Independence Day," which is fine but, you know, ultimately underwhelming. The trailer also feels far too serious for a follow-up to what was essentially a sci-fi comedy movie. Will Smith punched an alien to death and then lit a cigar in the original picture - something that you can't imagine happening in the oppressively-rendered world of Resurgence. The studio might have been better off teasing something a little more fun. Because there are already too many quasi-serious apocalypse movies in the world.
