10 Trick Castings That Totally Fooled You
9. Samuel L. Jackson - Deep Blue Sea
One of the best examples of trick casting is the enjoyably daft shark movie Deep Blue Sea. The plot has scientists engineer smart sharks to develop a cure for Alzheimer's – because that sounds like a good idea. The shark's escape and hunt down the crew, and it’s up to badass financier Sam Jackson to lead them to safety.
After all, he’s the biggest name in the cast and his character is an avalanche survivor; of course, he’s going to take charge. He even gathers them together for an inspiration speech; he’s rudely interrupted when a shark jumps out of the water and rips him apart, though.
This scene works for many reasons. Jackson’s role is essentially a decoy, designed to misled the audience into thinking he’s the hero, only for him to get cruelly snatched away before he does anything. He's shocking and hilarious at the same time.
