10 Unanswered Movie Questions That Kept You Up All Night

7. What Was Up With The Worms? - The Babadook (2014)

The Babadook centres on single mother Amelia (Essie Davis) as she attempts to raise her troubled son, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), following the unexpected death of her husband. She does her best to care for her child but when a mysterious book, titled Mister Babadook, arrives on the family doorstep, Samuel becomes terrified of (and obsessed with) the titular monster €“ causing his already challenging behaviour to become unbearable. When the monster finally reveals himself (or itself?) we soon learn that the monster is really just an analogy of Amelia€™s emotional turbulence. The Babadook represents the torment of the mother, and her inability to resolve the feelings of the loss of her husband. As the book states, €œthe more you deny me, the stronger I get.€ However, the final scene of the film shows Amelia digging up worms from her garden and (literally) feeding them to this being (or whatever you want to call it). What does this mean? Why worms? Maybe this scene is macabre proof that now Amelia knows where her husband really belongs €“ in the ground, were these creatures reside. But isn't that a bit obscure? Also, how did the son perform that magic trick in the end? That was pretty impressive. A little too impressive.
