10 Unbelievably Boring Horror Movies

2. The Dunwich Horror

Bradley Cooper The Midnight Meat Train
American International Pictures

A film based on the works of H.P Lovecraft has no right to be this boring. This blasphemous film takes the name of the Dunwich Horror but does not do a decent job of living up to the brand that it is adapting. It functions perfectly fine as a monotonous horror film that lacks charm, but as a Lovecraft adaptation, it is spectacularly mundane.

The film follows Wilbur Whateley as he travels to Arkham Miskatonic university to find the Necronomicon. He then intends to use the horrifying artefact to complete a ritual.

The parallels between this film and the original story aren't too noticeable. While Wilbur is implied as non-human, his appearance is very standard. The original story describes Wilbur in a monstrous form:

"Something almost goatish or animalistic about his thick lips, large-pored, yellowish skin, coarse crinkly hair, and oddly elongated ears."

This is not captured at all. Additionally, the gothic and atmospheric sense of dread and fear is not present whatsoever in this outing. Arkham appears to be nothing but a simple, well-lit university, and none of the characters feel remotely intimidating.

It is not a film that would even be recognisable as a Lovecraft project were it not for the associated names.
