10 Underappreciated 80s Slashers

5. Sleepaway Camp

Sleepaway Camp
American Eagle Films

On the surface this may look like another carbon copy of the many summer camp horrors of the decade but beyond this common blueprint is a unique take on the Slasher movie. The back story to the narrative is above average and the film gives us a chillingly executed end twist which is a stand out across the whole sub-genre. There are also a number of brilliantly bizarre characters and some genuinely shocking moments throughout the film.

The film starts with a tragic accident, leaving our central character Angela as the only survivor, before jumping forward several years as Angela is preparing to go to camp with her cousin Ricky, sent off by her weird Aunt Martha (Desiree Gould).

As mentioned, the camp is populated by some pretty memorable characters, namely the foul-mouthed Judy who steals the best lines of the script. It isn’t long before the campers start being brutally murdered by a mystery killer and the resultant death scenes are all brilliantly inventive. The performance from Felissa Rose as Angela is also impressive throughout - all leading to that fantastic ending which will stand long in the memory.
