10 Underappreciated Movies That Should Have Inspired Franchises

8. Treasure Planet (2002)

Treasure Planet In 2002, Disney released one of their most ambitious films yet... a science fiction retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island. Featuring the voices of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Martin Short among others, the movie gave us a lush and beautiful series of visuals accompanied by some good humor and occasionally intense scenes. The main attraction is the amazing look of the ships. They took the general look of sailing vessels from the 19th century and adapted them for space. How awesome is that? Tragically, the film under-performed at the box office, taking in $109 million against a $140 million budget, despite being perfectly set for a franchise. They could manage dozens of cool adventures for Jim Hawkins traveling through space on one of these ships.
