10 Underrated Actors Who Don't Deserve The Hate

6. Colin Farrell

new world After years of sex tapes and booze-sodden binges, Colin Farrell must think himself some pretty dangerous dude. But far off from seeming like some bad boy movie star, Farrell just comes across as a bit of a hopeless dork. He's also capable of picking some shockingly bad movies to star in; if you've ever had to sit through Daredevil or Total Recall, you're bound to hate him a little bit. But Farrell's screen magnetism is under-valued, even now he's come back to prominence with some smart project choices. Smaller but more interesting roles in the low budget likes of The Way Back, Crazy Heart and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus suggest a diminishing of Farrell's ego, while some genuinely great performances - for In Bruges, Tigerland, Minority Report - prove what a talent he can be. Best of all is his work in The New World, where Farrell became one of the few actors that didn't just act as a flesh prop in a Terence Malick movie. Through an apparent connection with and understanding of the director's style, his tragic John Smith is a display of rare stillness from Farrell, something quietly touching and achingly romantic. It's even more impressive when you consider Farrell's real personality, where vulgarity and textbook narcissism reign.
