10 Underrated Animated Movies You Have To See
2. Waking Life (2001)
Richard Linklater's philosophical drama Waking Life is set almost entirely in a dream, as an unnamed man (Wiley Wiggins) suffers an existential crisis and travels subconsciously through a series of increasingly deep conversations about the nature of dreams, humanism, love, purpose and metaphysics.
Waking Life is a beautiful designed movie that moves between scenes and characters without breaking up the tension or forcing the emotional power of the protagonist's journey.
The cast, too, is exquisite, made up of supporting turns from Ethan Hawk and Julie Delpy (reprising their role from Before Sunset), and director Steven Soderbergh.
It's a challenging film to be sure, and one some viewers may find slightly too pretentious to fully enjoy, but Waking Life is more than intelligent, thoughtful and innovative enough to make it a worthwhile experience for anyone willing to follow its tale.
