10 Underrated Christmas Movies You Need To See
1. Carol
One of the most fascinating subversive entries into the Christmas movie canon simply had to be put at the top of this list. Carol is not only the most underrated Christmas movie ever made, but it is one of the absolute best.
Therese is a lonely toy store clerk, who quickly falls in love with a mysterious woman named Carol. But in 1950s America, their love is one that puts them both in very real danger. So the minute they're in the clear, they run off on a road trip where they can love each other in peace.
Like the book it's based on - The Price Of Salt - Carol perfectly captures the dread and constricting feeling of living in a world that violently hates you for the crime of existence. But don't take that to mean it's a total downer, as there are many moments where Therese is with Carol where you get to see genuine joy on her face for the first time, made all the more striking when compared to the fakery she puts on when with her various male associates.
Carol is one of the most important Christmas movies ever made, because it captures that cliche Christmas ideal of togetherness in a way none of the rest do.
