10 Underrated Horror Movie Remakes

9. Evil Dead (2013)

13 Ghosts Matthew Lillard

The Evil Dead series is a franchise that lent itself to a remake so well.

This 2013 film made some huge changes despite the main premise being pretty much a direct copy on paper. There seem to be two main problems that make people unfairly deride this version.

The first problem is that there was no Bruce Campbell returning as original hero Ash Williams, and instead, we get the troubled Mia. They introduce a great subplot about her kicking heroin that causes her to be unpredictable even when not a rampaging demon, and going off the 1st movie as a comparison, it makes her by far the better and more complex character.

The second issue was with the villainous deadites. They are far more intense and open to body modification, but they have zero personality and the trademark fun humor they brought is nowhere to be found.

What the film lacks in personality though, it more than makes up for in crazy pacing and tension. People are mauled in numerous torturous ways and blood is spilled so much the entire last act appears to be filmed entirely in red.

It may have took itself too seriously and the deadites lacked character, but it was one of the most heart-pounding, gruesome horror films of the 2010s and gave fans the gore-soaked thrills they craved.

It's a different style to the classic Sam Raimi original, and to write it off due to it not being exactly the same would mean to miss a gorgeous, horrifying experience.
