What's It About? Maddie (Kate Siegel), a deaf writer who lives alone in the middle of the woods, is forced to fight back when a mysterious masked killer appears outside her home.

Why You Should Watch It: Hush's central 'gimmick' (the deaf victim) makes for a number of frightening scenarios, and Maddie's disability is exploited to full effect.

The baddie in Hush makes himself visible to his victim from the get-go - because he can - then stalks in silence afterwards, when usually, those two are the other way around. It cleverly flips a basic scenario, allowing the scares and violence to start early on, and it doesn't let up from there.

This helps Hush feel fresh despite the formulaic 'home invasion' story at its core. The movie does lose a pinch of menace when the killer removes his scarily-effective mask, but throughout, it's tense, nerve-wracking and unpredictable.

Hush was directed by Mike Flanagan, who - with efforts like Oculus, the surprisingly enjoyable Ouija: Origin Of Evil and the upcoming Gerald's Game (based on the Stephen King novel) - is definitely one to watch.

And if you're looking to dive into his filmography, Hush is a fine display of his skill as a horror director and a great place to start.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
