10 Underrated Horror Movies You Should Watch This Halloween

7. Over Your Dead Body

Over My Dead Body Takashi Miike
Shout! Factory

When discussing the best Horror auteurs of our generation, it is impossible not to bring up the name Takashi Miike. The film-maker has generated some of the most gruesome but thought-provoking films that the genre has ever seen. His hits include Audition, Gozu and Ichi the Killer. With the number of popular titles that he has created, it is no surprise that some of his work ends up going under the radar.

While it may not live up entirely to the same standard as the rest of his projects, Over Your Dead Body is a fascinatingly beautiful exploration of horror. It tells the story of a theatre troupe in Japan staging a production of "Ghost Story of Yotsuya". As the rehearsals for this production continue, the line between art and reality begins to blur in a twisted and supernatural way.

The focus on the concept of art gives the film a sense of purpose and beauty. Miike's signature symbolic storytelling and expert cinematography lends validity to the grand ideas explored in the title. The atmosphere of the film captures the spirit of ghost folklore perfectly. As the story the troupe are telling is a relevant traditional tale in Japan, this feels incredibly appropriate.

If you are looking for a meaningful experience this Halloween that doesn't exist in the western style that you are used to, then you should view this product.
