10. Thirst

Park Chan-Wook, possibly best known for his Vengeance Trilogy which included the masterful Oldboy, has been trying his hand at a variety of genres since finishing his tryptych of revenge films, from the quirky (but still rather dark) I'm A Cyborg, But That's Okay to his more recent sinister family melodrama Stoker - a convenient enough connection for this list. But old habits die hard, and themes from Park's earlier work can be readily found in Thirst, his modern-day parable about a faithless Catholic priest who undergoes a transfusion containing 'tainted' blood and becomes a vampire who takes blood from coma victims in the hospital he visits before setting himself on a darker path. Kong Sang-Ho, a Park Chan-Wook regular, gives a mesmerising performance as the conflicted clergyman who later embarks upon an affair with a married woman and becomes so haunted by his actions that he...well, let's not spoil too much for you. Suffice it to say that Thirst is one of the most original and compelling vampire stories since they started being told. If you like twisted love stories, this one's for you.
