10 Unexpectedly Awesome 2017 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

7. Power Rangers

Why It Should've Sucked: The marketing for Power Rangers seemed to suggest that it was the latest cynical attempt by a movie studio to adapt a beloved pop-culture property into a mammoth blockbuster franchise, with its Transformers-esque visual style and already planned six-movie arc.

There's no way this would work, right?

Why It Was Awesome: While critics were pretty mixed on the film, the fan response was much more rapturous, and with good reason. Boasting an unexpected commitment to character development and refusing to rush the heroes into their suits, Power Rangers was a surprisingly human, heartfelt film that also served up a slew of ridiculous action in the third act.

It has issues, absolutely, but it captured the spirit of the series while reinventing it in an intriguingly gritty way for 2017. It's a damn same it bombed at the box office, killing all prospects of a sequel.
