10 Most Unexpectedly Tragic Endings To Otherwise Fun Movies

10. Time Bandits (1981)

Time Bandits, one of many Terry Gilliam movies that focuses on the power of the imagination, clings to a plot about a young boy named Kevin (Craig Warnock), who suddenly finds himself caught up in a wild adventure alongside the likes of John Cleese, Sean Connery and Michael Palin. When his parents refuse to take interest in their son's extensive creative passions (they spend their time buying gadgets), Kevin is whisked off to a faraway land in an immensely fun adventure yarn as he battles against - yep - "Evil" in this great (and underrated) flick. At the end of the movie, though, Kevin passes out and wakes up again in his bedroom - there's smoke everywhere and the house has partially burned down, thanks to his parents' new microwave, which caught alight and started the blaze. At this point, Kevin surmises that his trip was all a dream, but then realises that he still has the photos from the adventure. He parents discover a smouldering rock in the microwave, which Kevin realises is "Evil." He warns them not to touch, but they ignore him, which - here's the shocker - causes them to explode. The movie ends with Kevin parentless, his house burned down. "Mom? Dad?" he whimpers as we pan out. Gosh.
