Is The Last Stand disappointing after the first two X-movies? Yes. Was it dumb killing Cyclops off-screen? Yes. Did it try to cram too many plotlines into a slim runtime, waste the character of Angel and is Vinnie Jones' Juggernaut just the worst?

Yes, yes and yes.

Is it the massive turkey most fans make it out to be? No. The Last Stand is no classic, but it has more merits than its given credit. The concept of mutants taking a “cure” for their condition so they can become normal has powerful subtext, and some of the performances – namely from McKellen, Stewart and Grammer – are fantastic. The death of Professor X was a heartbreaker, Mystique being cured and abandoned by Magneto was a shocker and the love triangle between Rogue, Iceman and Kitty Pryde was well handled.

Brett Ratner has a better grasp on action than Singer and manages to stage a few gripping set-pieces too - just look at that finale. The Last Stand is a letdown for sure, but the universal loathing it inspires feels a bit much.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine, on the other hand...

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
