10 Universally Disliked Blockbusters (That Really Aren’t That Bad)

8. Last Action Hero

1993 was poised to be the battle between Jurassic Park and Last Action Hero, and we all know how that one turned out. While it’s true Last Action Hero has issues – namely the really annoying teen acting alongside Arnie – there’s a whole lot to love about it too.

There are some great jokes (Arnie’s Hamlet is one for the ages), Charles Dance is a perfect British villain and it was an early example of meta-commentary before all the cool kids started doing it. It was rare for a dumb blockbuster to also be kind of smart, and while it disappointed many at the time people are only now realising what it was trying to do.

It doesn’t always succeed and some of the gags fall flat (seriously, who thought the animated cat was a good idea?), but Last Action Hero is a secret gem waiting for rediscovery.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
