Not only that, but the two sequels Joss Whedon had planned for Alien: Ressurection may have come to fruition if that first one had gone to plan. Instead, audiences were instead blighted with two Alien Vs Predator films and Prometheus. Thanks a lot, universe. Whedon got the gig in the originally because he was the only person whose pitch managed to coax Sigourney Weaver back. Fox were so pumped at getting the franchise back on track with Weaver that they signed Whedon on for multiple Alien films as screenwriter, a plan which was nixed by the disappointing performance of Resurrection. Ever the environmentalist, he apparently recycled some of those ultimately unused ideas into his sci-fi show Firefly. Want to know how great a potential fifth Alien film, written by Joss Whedon, could've been? It would have been set on Earth, and James Cameron was involved in some capacity. Weaver wanted it to be set on the planetoid from the first film, though and Cameron swore off the franchise as a whole when he heard Alien Vs Predator was a thing. So the whole thing was junked.
