Nobody likes Alien: Resurrection. There are the few who will defend David Fincher's Alien 3 from those who claim it's too grim, that the killing off of two beloved characters in the first ten minutes was a step too far. Pretty much everyone's in agreement over the first two being canonical classics, and the Predator throwdowns didn't actually happen, right? Perhaps the biggest hater of Alien: Resurrection is Joss Whedon himself y'know, the guy who wrote the film's script. Or at least, a version of the script that may have changed a little during shooting. Whedon reckons the biggest problem wasn't so much that they tweaked his screenplay, they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable. So perhaps in the hands of an English-speaking director the French Jean-Pierre Jeunet's visuals were characteristically inspired, but he didn't have the ear for dialogue needed when filming a Joss Whedon script it might have been different. And, if they'd gone with his original third act set on Earth, Alien: Resurrection could've been a totally different movie.
