10 Unnecessary But Annoyingly Successful Film Sequels

7. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

I may receive a negative reaction for this statement, but the original Home Alone was only an average movie at best. It's a beloved Christmas movie, yes, but the plot was too ridiculous at times and Macaulay Culkin's character, Kevin, did not appeal to me at all. He was mean-spirited and seemed more like a brat than a child in distress. However, it was hilarious in parts, with the burglars being the true standouts of the film for me. I'm not surprised that the original was such a success though, considering the appeal it would have to children and adults alike. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York took all the positive aspects of the first instalment and completely ruined them. Not only did it lack originality, but the action became too ridiculous and just too cartoony for a live action film. Kevin feels even less like a scared child like he did in the first, which is no mean feat. His seemingly ingenious traps for the burglars were starting to get old by the end of the first film, so another film full of them did absolutely nothing for me. Combined with the very flimsy plot, this was a dire sequel. But it grossed $358,994,850 worldwide on a relatively small budget, so it was a commercial success. By the way, how didn't anybody call the Social Services on Kevin's parents? They lost their child not once, but twice. Now that's bad parenting.
