1. Smith IS Harlan - Atlas
The trailers for Netflix's upcoming sci-fi actioner Atlas look... not great, to be kind, with Jennifer Lopez starring as the titular data analyst, who finds herself teaming up with an AI, Smith, to take down an AI warrior, Harlan (Simu Liu), who is hell-bent on wiping out humanity.
The marketing hammers home the fact that Atlas is extremely distrustful of AI, and suggests her character's arc will involve her learning to co-operate with AI over the course of the movie.
Except, in an era where skepticism over AI is at an all-time high, wouldn't it be a fun twist if Smith actually turns out to be Harlan hiding himself in plain sight?
Late in the film, Atlas might realise that "Smith" has been leading her on the wrong path all along, at which point she needs to shed the AI assistance and get the job done herself.
It's certainly a more appealing message than "AI isn't that bad, actually," which the movie might otherwise be shooting for. Then again, this is Netflix we're talking about, so who knows...
