10 Upcoming Movies That Are Already Doomed

4. Wind River: The Next Chapter

Generally speaking, sequels to successful movies need to hit the ground running and get out there while audiences still care.

But honestly, was anyone even asking for a follow-up to Taylor Sheridan's terrific 2017 crime thriller Wind River?

And yet, Wind River: The Next Chapter was shot in the spring of 2023, without original stars Jeremy Renner or Elizabeth Olsen nor writer-director Sheridan.

The sequel instead focuses on two supporting characters from the original film played by Martin Sensmeier and Gil Birmingham, with a new ensemble cast rounded out by Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood, Alan Ruck, and Kali Reis.

None of this is inherently bad as sequel ideas go, but given that the script is being written by two people best known for penning 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Sheridan has been replaced in the director's chair by Kari Skogland (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), it can't not feel like a huge downgrade.

Above all this, though, the movie wrapped over two years ago and we've still not seen a single official image, with even one of its cast members, Kali Reis, saying she hadn't heard anything about the film as recently as January.

This feels very much like a sequel that's going to be quietly dumped on a streaming service in the near future.

In the very least, it's not going to make even a fraction of the impact that its brilliant predecessor did.
