5. The Current War
What is the one thing Hollywood loves more than a good old-fashioned biopic? If you answered, "A good old-fashioned biopic with two well-known historical figures facing off against one another and probably involving Benedict Cumberbatch in some capacity," you would be spot on.
The Current War tells the story of Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) in their competition to bring electricity to the American public and have their respective company reign supreme as the primary provider of it. That, alone, is an intriguing match up.
Then you add in the rest of the cast, who are for the most part just exactly the actors you would want to be involved in this project, and you get spectacular icing on top of this already awesome cake. Nicholas Hoult of X-Men's Best fame will appear as Nikolas Tesla, Matthew Macfayden will play JP Morgan, while the chronically under-appreciated Damien Molony and young upstart Tom Holland will show up along with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star Katherine Waterston.
If, like the Academy, prestige biopics are your thing, this one seems particularly unlikely to fail.
