6. Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri
It's about that time in Frances McDormand's life cycle where she's due to once again receive critical attention for a gritty drama about small town America. That's what we're almost certainly to get with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Mourning the untimely death of her daughter, Mildred Hayes (McDormand) rents three billboards just outside of her rural community to broadcast a confrontational message to the town's chief of police, whom she believes to have played a role in her daughter's murder. It's a dark comedy about the claustrophobic community experience that small town life provides, and the dark undertones that can permeate beneath the surface.
Ever since Fargo, everyone and their dog has been clamoring for McDormand to make more of these types of films, so it's hard to imagine a world where Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri doesn't get some serious critical attention.
Add to the mix a script undoubtedly full of dark humor by Martin McDonagh of In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths fame, and a quirky but star-studded supporting cast that includes Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Peter Dinklage, and you've got yourself a winner.
