The upcoming Aquaman sequel just can't catch a damn break, having found itself at the center of numerous controversies both minor and major.

First and foremost, there was a prominent fan campaign to have the film's female lead Mera recast after Amber Heard lost her defamation trial against ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Though the petition reached over 4.5 million signatures and DC Films head Walter Hamada did reveal they considered recasting the character due to Heard's chemistry concerns with Jason Momoa, it ultimately never happened.

All the same, Heard herself claims that her role was reduced due to the trial.

Elsewhere, post-production has been anything but smooth, with the film being delayed to December 2023, an entire year past its original release date, while several rounds of reshoots have been conducted after test screenings reportedly called it "boring."

Director James Wan has also been said to have "had a rough time" completing the film, which flip-flopped between including filmed cameos for Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton's versions of Batman, both of which have since been cut due to this movie now being the final entry into the DCEU.

And on top of that, with audiences aware that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a narrative dead-end before James Gunn's DCU starts anew, will they even bother turning up for it at the box office?
