10 Upcoming Movies That Are Definitely Going To Bomb

1. Pearl

Haunted Mansion
A24

Prior to the release of Ti West's X earlier this year, the director surprised everyone by revealing that he'd already shot a followup film in secret. This followup - a prequel centred on Mia Goth's character, Pearl - will be slashing its way into theatres on 16 September, marking the creation of A24's first-ever horror franchise.

West also has ideas for a third film in the series, but based on the box-office performance of X - and the likely box-office performance of Pearl - West is about to set a record by creating a franchise that starts and ends in the exact same year.

Despite having a budget around the $10 million range, X failed to make it past $15 million worldwide, a shockingly bad result even in this unpredictable post-pandemic era. Even its stellar reviews and lack of competition didn't help it.

With that in mind, all signs point to Pearl suffering a similar fate. Viewers have already shown they're not interested in these movies, and it's tough to imagine a prequel bursting out into the mainstream when even the franchise's launchpad couldn't find an audience.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
