10 Upcoming Movies That Have Already Been Saved From Sucking

The Original Pitch

Since this is what the movie was originally going to be, we have to be honest: a Barbie comedy movie starring Amy Schumer would've been bloody awful. It sounded a little trashy and inappropriate, especially considering that Barbie is a family-friendly brand and Schumer is known for her raunchy adult comedy.

It also doesn't help that, besides Trainwreck, Schumer's film output has been rather weak, a worrying sign when you're about to become the face of a potential new franchise.

How It's Been Saved

The Schumer idea was dropped in early 2017, but recently, Barbie has once again picked up steam with the casting of Margot Robbie in the title role. Robbie is an Oscar-calibre actress and is no stranger to fronting blockbusters, so this is about as perfect as the casting for this role is going to get.

Things got even better last month with the announcement that Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig and The Life Aquatic writer Noah Baumbach had signed on to pen the script, with Gerwig also eyed to helm the project. The two are in a relationship in real life so they should be on the same page creatively, and based on their combined filmography, that page will be one hell of a read.

Gerwig earned an Academy Award nomination for her sharp and funny Lady Bird screenplay, while Baumbach has been in the business since the mid-1990s, working on successful comedies, dramas, and even stop-motion animations. Their Barbie film won't just be funny - it might actually have something interesting to say. They're both competent, top-tier filmmakers, and this project couldn't be in safer hands.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
