10 Upcoming Movies That Have Cast Completely The Wrong Person

5. Kim Basinger - Fifty Shades Darker

Kim Basinger recently signed on to star as Elena Lincoln in next year's bound-to-be-horrific sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, based on the novel by E.L. James. If you've had the unfortunate experience or reading Fifty Shades Darker, you'll know that Lincoln is the character who got sadistic billionaire Christian Grey into all that bondage stuff in the first place. In the book, the character is described as being somewhere in her late '30s or early '40s. "Wait," you think. "Isn't Kim Basinger, like, sixty-years-old?" Indeed: the Oscar-winning L.A. Confidential actress will turn 63 this year. Now, this writer is all for casting older women in Hollywood movies, but this casting decision strains the point of believability a little too much. Not only does it betray the admittedly lackluster source material, it doesn't really make sense: Basinger is old enough to be Christian Grey's grandmother, given that he's only supposed to be 27-years-old himself. Granted, having Basinger involved in the film was probably deemed to be something of a progressive move, but even in a Fifty Shades movie it all seems far too implausible. Who, then? Charlize Theron, one of Hollywood's best and most beautiful actresses, is way more age appropriate, given the relationship depicted in the novel. She can play cold and bitchy like the best of them, and would have any easy time convincing audiences that she holds a power over Christian Grey. An obvious choice, perhaps, but a guaranteed win.
