10 Upcoming Movies That Just Got Delayed

8. Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist

After the critical and commercial disappointment of The Exorcist: Believer in 2023, Universal decided to scrap two planned sequels, instead announcing in May 2024 that the terrific Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) was in talks to write, direct, and produce a new Exorcist reboot.

A month later it was locked in to release on March 13, 2026, though as of this past June it was removed from the studio's release calendar, as left some fans understandably concerned.

However, Flanagan recently confirmed on his Tumblr page that his Exorcist movie is absolutely still going ahead, but won't be making its previous March 2026 date.

This is because he's still mid-production on his Carrie miniseries for Amazon, which is set to wrap shooting in October, after which post-production will presumably keep Flanagan tied up for a significant chunk of 2026.

And so, it's likely that his Exorcist film won't start shooting until late 2026 at the very earliest, meaning we're almost certainly not seeing it until 2027 or even 2028.

Flanagan reiterated, though, that fans have nothing to worry about. Certainly it seems to be a simple case of a very talented director just being incredibly busy.
