The Film

This 2004 take on the Daniel Handler novels Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, saw Jim Carrey go full on panto villain, camping it up as the dastardly Count Olaf and his attempts to get his paws on the money of three wealthy orphans.

A reasonably well-received stab at the hugely popular stories grossing more than $200 million worldwide for the Nickelodeon Studios.

The TV Show

The Snicket stories have now been taken up by Netflix, who’ll be premiering the TV version in January 2017. With Barry Sonnenfeld (Men In Black) at the helm and Neil Patrick Harris stepping into Carrey’s shoes as Olaf. 8 episodes have been penned for season one, and will cover the first four of Snicket/ Handler’s original books.

Will It Work?

First looks suggests a darkly comic, surreal series, making Netflix seem the ideal platform for the success. With all episodes being released at once, it’s crying out for a spot of binge-watching from the legions of Lemony lovers.
