The Films

Based on the Divergent trilogy of novels from Veronica Roth, we’ve so far had three of the planned four films in the series. As is the tradition these days, the third novel being split into two films (Damn you, Harry Potter!).

It’s another Dystopian future where teens get things kinda tough. This time inhabiting a totalitarian society that divides people into factions according to personality traits. The fourth film – Divergent: Ascendant – was due to be in the cinema in the summer of 2017.

However…

The TV Show

The disappointing critical and commercial return from the third instalment has prompted the producers to announce in October that Divergent’s future lies on television. The plan is to turn Ascendant into a TV movie out of which will spin a stand-alone series thereafter.

Will It Work?

The signs are not good: lead actor Shailene Woodley has been audibly unimpressed by the proposed move with fellow actors expressing doubt over whether they will be signing up.

In the wake of the Hunger Games and the diminishing returns here, the future of these types of YA stories may be as bleak as the landscapes in which they are usually set.
