10. The House By The Cemetery (1981) - From £0.39

house.by the cemetery resized The films of Lucio Fulcio can be ever so slightly hit and miss, you could turn up a jewel or a turnip. The House By The Cemetery is a hybrid of the two. It is an entertaining supernatural haunted house thriller which is slightly ruined by the presence of that little snotrag Italian actor - Giovanni Frezzi (playing whiny, unlovable tyke Bob) who has messed with the viewing pleasure of many an Italian horror movie. Basically, Bob and his parents move into a somewhat ramshackle house where there is something dodgy going on in the cellar.. Dr Freudstein. This sick puppy was an eminent Victorian surgeon who was the Dr Mengele of his day - performing cruel and unusual experiments. He also killed his entire family, and guess what? He's alive. (in zombie form). Bob, the little twerp, decides to explore the cellar where he is grabbed by Dr Freudstein. He thus sparks off a chain of events where both of his parents die and Bob himself, at the end of the film, gets led down a desolate passage into a world of dead spirits and misery. Take that you little snotrag! No happy ending for you. This pleasing turn of events redresses the turnip aspects of The House By The Cemetary and it becomes a bleak dystopian jewel a la Fulci's (perhaps greatest) masterpiece The Beyond. If you are a Fulci fan who has missed this one or you enjoy moderately violent supernatural films then it's worth spending a penny on The House By The Cemetery.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
