10 Video Nasties Fans Once Paid A Fortune For (That Now Cost 99p)

9. The Toolbox Murders (1978) - From £0.01

toolbox resized One case where I wouldn't even fork out a penny for a movie is our next diabolical nasty - The Toolbox Murders. I absolutely hate this film. Why it is so highly regarded amongst video nasty fans I have no clue. I think it is misogynist in the extreme, grimy, mean spirited, poorly shot and basically just an excuse to watch the torture and killing of women. The 'plot' consists of some sicko who seems intent on murdering all of the female tenants in an apartment complex with various tools. A load of women get killed in a sleazy fashion. Then the killer, who is Vance - the boss of the appartment complex, kidnaps a young school girl - Laurie - because he thinks that Laurie is his daughter Cathy. He admits to killing all the women because they were presumably evil whores. So now the question is: will this maniac be stopped? This film is as cheerful as watching fluffy kittens being disembowelled with a machete. Enjoy it for a penny if you please as long as it's not on my DVD player. Or within a five mile radius of it. Tobe Hooper apparently remade it in 2004. What his rationale was, I don't want to know.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
